Vayalar started his film career in 1956 by writing songs for the film Koodappirappu. He wrote over 1300 songs for more than 250 films. He also wrote about 150 songs for 25 plays. His association with G.Devarajan Master created a great record in the world of Malayalam film music.
The duo began with the 1959 film Chaturangam and by the time Vayalar died in 1975, they had composed 755 songs from 135 films. Sixty percent of the film songs written by Vayalar are sung by Devarajan Master. Aayiram Padasarangal Kilungi and many of the songs composed by the two together, such as Periyarre Periyarre, Kannirumuthumai, Kaatil Ilamkaatil, Chakravarthini, Kallipalakal Poothu, and Yavanasundari, became obsolete. He did his formal education at Cherthala High School and studied Sanskrit in the gurukula style under the supervision of his mother and uncle.
He was associated with the communist movement and progressive cultural and literary movements. He wrote many works, including Padamudra (poems). Vayalar became more famous as a film songwriter than a poet. He wrote over a thousand songs that captured the joys and sorrows of the green man. In 1961, he received the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for his work Sargasangeetham. He also won the President's Gold Medal for Best Film Songwriter for his films "Nellu" and "Athidhi". In 1957, during the EMS ministry, the song "Balikudirangale ..." written for the inauguration ceremony of palayam rakthasakshi mandapam was very popular. At that time, the Vayalar-Devarajan master duo presented many songs to the Malayalees.
'Ayesha' is a Vayalar poem that makes it clear that the emancipation of women can only be achieved through economic equality. Vayalar died at 4:00 am on October 27, 1975, at the age of forty - seven.
